gallery on the street

one of the things i like best about portland is that what would be a typical neighborhood of limited variety elsewhere is a smorgasbord of creative energy here. forget neighborhood councils that put ridiculous regulations on what your house or yard may or may not look like. the west is full of diy energy that although is not always pretty can certainly entertain me for many strolls to come.

this is one of the better executed vehicle artworks i've spotted in my vicinity. i am led to believe it is owned by someone who works at the together gallery, a local artist collective around the corner from me.

the older i get

i'm currently at an age where many of my peers are beginning to settle into marriage and family life leaving me asking what next. i don't foresee myself pitching a tent in either of these camps, but its hard to avoid at least walking through them, like some sort of sasquatch, people amazed and concerned with me.

for some it only brings the illusion of happiness. a promise of fulfillment ingrained in many of us from an early age. great numbers reach enjoyment from this next direction in life and i'm happy to see them this way, but for me i sometimes shutter at the idea, which leads me to illustrate things like this.

from real life

today i sat at an old desk chair while outside one of portland's fine local roasters and stared at a clean little honda motorcycle. as i sat there rubbing my sore thighs (we just climbed to the top of mount st. helens a few days prior) it got me pondering if i still had the knack to draw something realistic or if i had worked myself into an abstract cartoon pit from which escape was daunting.

turns out i still got it! at least a little bit.

after i finished the sketch i was hoping i'd bump into the owner of the bike, so that i might give him my fine scribblings, but alas no rider to be found. this is good news for anyone viewing the the site cause had i givin the image away you'd never have the opportunity to see it, which would have been a same. right?

so, enjoy this and another sketch i did a week prior in the same spot of some faces. if only people were a bazillion faces how long it would take, but how entertaining it would be to draw them.

creating kinks to work out

i'm currently attempting to refine this blog while simultaneously dabbling in the creation of a real website, which could potentially swallow the blog or vice versa.

stay tuned.
